Autism and Developmental Disabilities Services

Under the United States’ special education law, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), individuals with autism or another developmental disability are eligible for education services that meet their needs.

There are a number of laws under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which provide for accommodations, rights and other services for adults with developmental and other disabilities.

Services for adults with disabilities are not federally mandated; however, there are many laws that enable states to provide matching funds, through Medicaid, to subsidize or provide community support services and long-term support. Each state follows its own policies on what – if any – community services are available to adults with developmental disabilities.
